STEAK

Steak
About This Artist

Steak is best-known for “Big Bear,” a song featured in the climactic moments of the Fox Searchlight cult comedy, Super Troopers, as well as its sequel, Super Troopers 2. “Second To The Bottle” can be heard in the sequel as well.

Founded in 1992 in Boulder, CO by two New York natives, Erik Lieblein (“a disturbingly refreshing frontman” — Colorado Daily) and John Pancaldo (aka Jack Grace, “the hardest working eyebrows in showbiz” — SF Weekly), the group was rounded out by bassist TJ Thomas who hailed from Michigan and another NY native, drummer Stu Damm.

The group quickly won over the Boulder music scene, earning a loyal fan base there as well as  a home turf alliance back in New York City. The eclectic stage show that included car giveaways, a Jordache-themed dance with its own moves, and lots of onstage antics created a momentum that saw the band touring from coast to coast with the Beat Farmers, NRBQ, Uncle Tupelo, Aquarium Rescue Unit, Fishbone, The Funky Meters, Leo Nocentelli, and Zigaboo Modeliste. Steak eventually got its own tour bus and essentially lived on the road, making San Francisco home base for a time.

The group eventually made a permanent move to New York City. Bassist TJ Thomas officially left in 1997 but has returned to play shows on occasion. In his absence, several players have taken over the bass chair, including Chris Ward, Danny Garcia, J Granelli, and currently, Mike Jay.

A new Steak album entitled Seven Cuts is set for release in 2025.
